Athens: on the Acropolis, the works of discord

The face of the site the Acropolis is disfigured to the chagrin of its admirers. As reported by BFMTV, which spotted an article in the Greek newspaper Kathimerini, the Greek Ministry of Culture has drawn the wrath of certain archaeologists and historians after deciding to concrete part of the site, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, in order to connect these famous monuments by alleys. Thus, ancient rocks, present around the Parthenon, the Propylaea, the Erechtheion and the temple of Athena, have disappeared from circulation to give way to a transformed landscape of the Athenian hill.

Criticized in much of the country, the Greek Minister of Culture, Lina Mendoni, defended her project, arguing that the route was made to improve wheelchair access and facilitate the transport of the marble blocks to Parthenon, which is still under restoration. The work on the Acropolis site was carried out in the midst of the Covid-19 period, at the end of 2020, a period when no one could climb onto the site.

This project did not fail to raise the voices of several architects, who believe that these arrangements were made, not in favor of the disabled, but in order to make the site more accessible to the millions of tourists who tread the millennial site every year. Asked by the daily Release, the Greek historian Tasos Tanoulas strongly criticized this initiative and even goes so far as to assert that by covering the mythical stones of the site, “part of the understanding of our past is therefore also covered”. “It is a massacre to cover this monument, these stones” he added.

The architect of the works defends himself

For his part, the architect Manolis Korrès, who supervised the restoration work on the site, defended himself by considering that concrete was “a material close to nature”, which contradicts, according to him, the accusations of weathering of the rock. He says he is “fully satisfied” with the result of the work and calls on the public to see it “with their own eyes” to judge.

While the Greek Ministry of Culture is delighted with the improved accessibility to the site, opponents point to the fact that the thickness of this concrete strip is, in some places, too high to facilitate the passage of wheel chairs. The usefulness of this work has therefore not finished talking on the site of the most visited monument in Greece.
