According to Atlas VPN analysts, in 2020, hackers were able to steal $ 3.8 billion worth of cryptocurrencies, with about $ 3 billion of them stolen from cryptocurrency wallets.
It should be noted right away that the amounts are given in US dollars and are calculated at the rate of mid-January. If we count the stolen cryptoassets at coin rates at the time of theft, then the amounts will be less impressive.
According to the Atlas VPN report, there were 122 successful attacks last year. The attackers mainly focused on hacking DeFi projects on the Ethereum blockchain (47 attacks), cryptocurrency exchanges (28 attacks), and wallets (27 hacks). At the same time, the largest amount was stolen from wallets – $ 3,027 billion. Another $ 436 million was stolen from decentralized applications and $ 300 million from cryptocurrency exchanges.
In 2019, 133 hacks were recorded, so the number of attacks decreased slightly. Analysts expect 2021 to confirm the downward trend in hacks.
Recall that in early December, a hacker hacked into the wallet of the founder of the DeFi project Nexus Mutual and withdrew tokens in the amount of $ 8.4 million. Later, Hugh Karp told the details about the hacking of his wallet.
