According to London police, the Veltman deliberately threw his truck at the Afzaal family in the context of a “premeditated energy, designed and instigated by hatred”.

Five members of the same family were killed while waiting to cross an intersection in the city of London, 200 km southwest of Toronto. Both parents, their 15-year-old daughter and 74-year-old grandmother, were killed, but their 9-year-old son, who was seriously injured, survived.

“This massacre was not an accident. “It was a hate attack, motivated by hatred, in the center of one of our communities,” Trinto said during a speech to the House of Commons.

The tragedy, which shocked the country, is the deadliest attack on Muslims in Canada since the shooting incident at the Quebec mosque, in which six people lost their lives in 2017.
