Attack on hospital in Gaza should not change Brazil’s proposal for resolving the conflict, say government members

Members of the Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) government claim that the attack on the hospital in the Gaza Strip should not change Brazil’s proposal for a resolution to the Israel-Hamas conflict. The United Nations (UN) Security Council meeting that would vote on the text this Tuesday (17) was postponed until tomorrow.

According to members of Itamaraty, the transfer of the Security Council meeting was so that new comments could be incorporated into the text, but there are no substantial changes to be made.

CNN found that there is no specific mention of Israel in the proposal. The text, therefore, must continue with the condemnation of the extremist Islamic group Hamas and the terrorist attacks.

The proposed resolution should continue to emphasize the release of the hostages and also the need to contain an escalation of the conflict.

The text formulated by the Brazilian government calls for the “immediate withdrawal of the order”, given by Israel, for Palestinian civilians and United Nations employees to evacuate the north of the Gaza Strip and relocate to the southern region of the territory. The proposal also calls for the creation of humanitarian corridors.

The resolution drawn up by Brazil mentions Hamas by name. The text “unequivocally rejects and condemns Hamas’ heinous terrorist attacks” and “calls for the immediate and unconditional release of civilian hostages.”

The reference to the extremist Islamic group is what primarily marks the difference from Russia’s proposal, which was rejected on Monday night by the UN Security Council.

The Russian text called for an immediate ceasefire in the region and the opening of humanitarian corridors, in addition to condemning all terrorist acts, but did not mention Hamas.
