Attack on market in Germany: Magdeburg residents pay tribute to the victims

Residents of Magdeburg, a city in Germany that suffered an attack on a Christmas market, came out this Sunday morning (22) to pay tribute to the victims in front of Saint John’s church.

Residents and emergency services workers stood silently and laid flowers, candles and toys in front of the church near the Christmas market, where at least five people were killed and dozens injured.

A man suspected of running over hundreds of people faces murder and attempted murder charges, police said Sunday.

The suspect is a 50-year-old man from Saudi Arabia who has lived in Germany for almost two decades.

A magistrate ordered that the man, identified in German media as Taleb A., be held in pre-trial detention after prosecutors brought charges of murder, multiple counts of attempted murder and grievous bodily harm, according to a police statement.

He identified the dead as a nine-year-old boy and four adult women, aged 52, 45, 75 and 67.
