“Attenzione Pickpocket”: Italian famous for videos has cell phone stolen, says newspaper

Italian Monica Poli – internationally famous for her videos “Attenzione Pickpocket” in which she warns tourists and chases pickpockets – went from being a vigilante to being a victim and had her cell phone stolen in Venice.

The information is from the newspaper Corriere Del Veneto, regional division of the traditional Corriere Della Sera.

Poli, who is a veteran city councilor for the far-right Northern League party, had her cell phone snatched from her hands in Piazzale Roma – one of the locations she often takes videos calling attention to thefts.

According to the newspaper’s findings, Poli was robbed “in a moment of distraction” and in front of the eyes of another witness.

Poli’s initiative to warn tourists about possible thefts is part of the Cittadini non distratti group (Citizens not distracted, in literal translation).

In a note, the group commented on the theft of Monica’s cell phone, saying that “one of ours has not been stolen for years”. “Last time it was a wallet. The hope is that the cell phone will be blocked as soon as possible”, he added.

In July, Monica gave an interview to CNN and explained how the idea of the “attenzione pickpocket” videos came from the Cittadini non distratti group.

After joining social networks, the group began to post photos of thieves, just covering their eyes. But, according to Monica, the group soon realized that, in some parts of Italy, it was also necessary to make videos.

“Many cities in Italy have this problem, including Milan, as well as many cities in Europe. It’s a bit of a global problem,” she comments.

In her case specifically, with the scream that became famous, Poli says that the idea came “overnight”. “I started doing it because we don’t use violence, we do a nuisance action [aos batedores de carteira]. If we see that someone’s wallet has been taken, we confirm it, activate ourselves and immediately call the police, ”she explains.

“But, to be honest, I never thought of such a media thing, worldwide, because I am everywhere, and the message we would like to send has finally been delivered: pay attention”, she completes.

questioned by CNN about the success that the video has been making in Brazil, Poli Monica thanked the Brazilians.

“Brazilians write to me a lot on Instagram. On TikTok, I am not able to reply to all messages. On Instagram, I even manage to send a thank you message at times. I saw that there are many Brazilians and I thank you all, even if I don’t reply to messages, I thank you very much, from the heart. I have Brazilian friends here in Venice, and they told me I’m famous, but I never imagined something like that”.
