Brazilian Manuela Vitória de Araújo Farias, 19, was arrested carrying about 3 kg of cocaine at the International Airport of Bali, Indonesia.
The chief of Bali’s police, Inspector General Putu Jayan Danu Putra, said at a press conference this Friday (27th), that, initially, Customs and Tax officers at the airport suspected Brazilian citizens who arrived using a plane from Qatar Airways.
The officers immediately checked the two suitcases brought by the woman.
According to him, two packets of cocaine were found in the first suitcase, each with a net weight of around 990 grams and 637 grams.
Already in the second suitcase, three packages of cocaine were found, each with a net weight of 891 grams, 711 grams and 379 grams.
Bali police drug research director Kombes Iwan Eka Putra said the Brazilian was being used by drug trafficking networks in his country. According to him, the woman claimed not to know what packages were in the two suitcases.
“She is, yes, a person who is used by the network. We cannot say that she is a messenger, because she does not know the goods. She is just one person used by the Brazilian network,” said Iwan.
Iwan said that the Brazilian also wanted to go to Bali because her colleague promised her a surf school. The woman’s hobby would be surfing.
“She was promised: ‘if you want to go to surf school, you can do it’. So this is a 19 year old girl and her hobby is surfing and this was promised by a close friend at her house so she brought the item with her.”
In addition, Iwan admits that he was unable to track who would receive the package of cocaine that the young woman was carrying from Brazil.
According to him, the woman also did not know where she would be taken when she arrived in Bali.
The Brazilian was indicted under the country’s law on narcotics, with the threat of the death penalty, life imprisonment or imprisonment for a minimum of five years and a maximum of 20 years.
