Audi has presented an interesting concept for a high-speed charging station for electric vehicles. Electric vehicles will be charged from a 300 kW device powered by lithium-ion batteries. The batteries themselves are supposed to be charged at night in order not to increase the local peak power demand. By the end of the summer, the company plans to test the described concept in Germany.
The automaker, which plans to release up to 20 all-electric vehicles in the coming years, notes that a reliable charging infrastructure will be key to their success. In fact, hundreds of thousands of new electric vehicles trying to charge during peak hours could wreak havoc on power grids. At the same time, by the time all these cars appear on the roads, charging stations and other facilities of the corresponding infrastructure may not be enough.
The station, being developed by Audi, is flexibly formed from containers that will house lithium-ion batteries with a capacity of up to 2.45 MWh, which will allow the installation of six 300 kW chargers. According to the manufacturer, such stations can be “quickly transported, installed and adapted to a specific location – largely regardless of the bandwidth of the local network.” Each station will have a buffet where drivers and passengers can spend time while the car is charging. Owners of Audi electric vehicles will be able to make pre-orders for charging, and owners of cars of other brands will be able to use the station in their free time.
