August Lilac: what are the advances and obstacles to women’s rights in Brazil

A bill passed by Congress last week addressed a longstanding feminist demand. The text guarantees greater autonomy for women who wish to undergo surgery in order not to have children. With the change in the law, sterilization procedures can be performed without the need for a spouse’s authorization.

The congressional decision was part of a series of projects on the protection of women’s rights approved by the Legislature during the month of August, which marks the 16th anniversary of the Maria da Penha Law, one of the most important instruments to combat violence against the woman in Brazil.

In this episode of E Tem Mais, Carol Nogueira presents a balance of the advances and obstacles in the protection of women’s rights in Brazil, in the midst of the creation of Agosto Lilás, a month dedicated to actions for the safety, health and education of Brazilian women.
