THE France is a “vital ally” of the United States in the Indo-Pacific region, assured the head of the American diplomacy Anthony Blinken on Thursday night (16/9), a day after the announcement of a tripartite alliance between the US, Britain and Australia, which angered Paris.
THE Anthony Blinken gave a press conference after the meeting he had in Washington with the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Defense of Australia, broadcasts APE-MPE. He stressed that the United States wants European countries to play an important role in the Indo-Pacific region, specifically describing France as a “vital alliance partner”.
“This alliance with Australia and the United Kingdom demonstrates that we want to work with our partners, including in Europe, to ensure a free and open zone,” he said in the Indian and Pacific.
“We welcome the European countries that play an important role in the Indo-Pacific area and we want to continue to work closely with NATO, the European Union and others to that end,” he said.
The new alliance, the so-called AUKUS, clearly has to counter China’s growing ambitions in the region.
In the same press conference, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin once again denounced “China’s destabilizing activities and Beijing’s efforts to put pressure on other countries and intimidate them.”
For her part, Australian Foreign Minister Mariz Payne said that “US leadership in the Indo-Pacific” remains “irreplaceable”.
Australian Defense Secretary Peter Dutton said he had agreed with the United States to step up cooperation between the two countries through the alternating development of all types of US military aircraft in Australia.
Commenting on Canberra’s decision to break the contract for the supply of French, conventional submarines and replace them with nuclear-powered American ones, Dutton said that the government decided in the interest of national security. He added that the choice for Australia to acquire a French nuclear power plant was not superior to the Anglo-American proposal.
