AUKUS: Macron and Biden talked – French ambassador returns to Washington

The presidents of France and the United States had a telephone conversation earlier today (22/9) who agreed that “open negotiations” between allies would have helped to avoid problems arising from the decision taken last week regarding the supply of nuclear submarines, American technology, in Australia.

THE Emanuel Macron and Joe Biden They also agreed to launch a “better consultation” process to forge conditions that “would guarantee confidence”, the French presidency said. According to the Elysee, the United States recognized the need for a stronger Europe in the field of defense, in the context of its contribution to NATO.

Next week, the French ambassador, who was recalled by Macron on the occasion of this submarine crisis, will return to Washington. Biden agreed that if France had been consulted before announcing this tripartite defense cooperation agreement with Australia and Britain, the diplomatic crisis would have been avoided, according to the Elysee.

Last week, France recalled its ambassadors from the United States and Australia for consultations, in a show of resentment after Canberra canceled a 54 billion-euro contract to supply French submarines.

In their telephone conversation today, the two leaders also agreed to meet in Europe in October.

The United States has also pledged to step up its support for European counter-terrorism missions in the Sahel.
