AUKUS: Today the Macron – Biden communication for submarines

The President of France Emanuel Macron will discuss today with his US counterpart Joe Biden for open crisis between Paris and Washington in connection with a contract for the purchase of French submarines from Australia, announced the representative of the French government Gabriel Atal.

This unnamed telephone conversation will be “a clarification conversation” in order to “clarify the circumstances under which this announcement was made and also clarify the terms of an American re-engagement in an allied relationship.” said the spokesman after the cabinet meeting, according to the APE-MPE.

It will take place “at the request of the President of the United States,” the Elysee Palace said.

Emanuel Macron is awaiting “clarifications on the US choice to keep a European ally at a distance from structural exchanges for cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region,” the presidency explained.

“We expect our allies to acknowledge that the talks and consultations that should have taken place have not taken place and that this raises an issue of trust, all the consequences of which are now up to us to deal with together,” Elize said.

The French head of state also expects “a commitment on this basis to a solid process determined in time and at a high level that allows the conditions for a restoration of confidence to be created in practice and with tangible measures and not just words”.

“This is mainly about: the strategic importance of the French and European commitment to the Indo-Pacific region; the full recognition by our American allies of the need to strengthen European sovereignty; and the importance of the growing commitment of Europeans to their security ∙ the common commitment in the fight against terrorism “, says Elize.

The communication between Messrs. Macron and Biden will take place while Paris has not calmed down after the announcement, on September 15, of a new alliance between Australia, the United States and Britain (AUKUS) which torpedoed a large contract for the sale of French submarines in Canberra.
