E Ink has expanded its color screen offerings over the past few years, but ePaper’s own technology isn’t the only one on the market. Taiwanese manufacturer AU Optronics recently introduced a new color display that shares some of the ePaper’s benefits despite using a completely different technology. It should make it cheaper and easier to manufacture.
At Touch Taiwan last week, the company showcased a 7.9-inch ChLCD display based on cholesteric liquid crystals. Such a display does not use energy to form a static image. Energy is spent only during the update of the content on the screen. Thus, the advantage of using such screens is both in reducing the overall power consumption and in the possibility of viewing an already formed image even in the absence of a power source. Also, like E Ink displays, ChLCD screens are reflective and do not need backlighting.
The difference is that ChLCD does not use a color filter, so the screen resolution is not lost when viewing color content. Because many of the components used to make ChLCDs are similar to LCDs, the cost to mass-produce this type of panel can be quite affordable.
ChLCD technology has been around for over ten years, but it has not been widely adopted. But with the growing demand for low-power displays due to the rise of IoT devices, that may be changing. AU Optronics suggested that such displays could find applications in education, transportation and traffic.
