Australia said on Friday (12) it had arrested a Russian-born couple on espionage charges, alleging the woman, an information systems technician in the Australian military, tried to access defense material and send it to Russian authorities.
The Australian Federal Police (AFP) said the woman, aged 40, had travelled to Russia and instructed her husband in Australia to log into her official account to access material relating to Australia’s national security, although no significant compromise had yet been identified.
They will appear in court on Friday after being charged with preparation for an espionage offence, which carries a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison. The charges are the first under new laws introduced six years ago.
The couple have lived in Australia for over 10 years, with the woman gaining Australian citizenship in 2016 and the husband in 2020.
