Australia: AstraZeneca vaccine will only be given to people over 60 years of age

THE Australia will recommend to be vaccinated with its preparation AstraZeneca only those over 60 years old, announced today the Minister of Health of the country Greg Hunt after a series of cases with thrombosis that appeared people who had been vaccinated with this specific preparation. Australia has administered 3.3 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine and this has been linked to 60 cases of thrombosis, as announced by the government, according to the APE.

Two deaths have been reported so far, which, according to Hunt, has led to a change of policy. “The government puts security first,” the minister told reporters in Canberra. “This updated recommendation we received today is based on new data showing a higher risk of developing a very rare condition. (thrombocytopenia syndrome) in the age group 50-59 years “.

In April, Australia restricted the use of the AstraZeneca vaccine to people over the age of 50. Many EU member states have stopped giving the AstraZeneca vaccine to people under the age of 50, usually between the ages of 50 and 65, limiting its use to older people due to the very rare occurrence of blood clots, especially among young people. Hunt said the recommendation would not delay the vaccination schedule, which aims to give at least one dose of the vaccine to every Australian before the end of 2021.

Australia in April has expanded its order to Pfizer to 40 million doses, while it has already ordered 25 million doses from Moderna. Australia’s updated vaccination policy comes at a time when the country’s most populous state is battling to contain a new outbreak. New South Wales has announced that it has recorded four domestic cases of coronavirus, the origin of which remains unknown. “At this stage we are all on alert,” state Prime Minister Gladys Beretziklian told reporters in Sydney.

The Delta strain is a cause for concern

A 60-year-old man working as an international airline crew driver tested positive for the virus yesterday – the first case in the state in more than a month – and his wife also tested positive. Genetic tests have shown that the man has been infected with the mutated Delta strain of the virus, officials say. The Delta strain, which has been included by the World Health Organization (WHO) in the four COVID-19 strains that cause concern because it is more easily transmitted, may have caused the recent outbreak in India.

About 12 public spaces in Sydney, including a movie theater and shopping mall in the popular tourist resort of Bodi and a supermarket, have been designated hotspots for the virus. Australia has successfully managed previous outbreaks of outbreaks and direct tracking and harsh social isolation measures. It has recorded about 30,300 cases and 910 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic.
