Australia bans travelers who have been to 9 countries in Africa

Australia has banned the entry of foreign nationals who have traveled to nine countries in Africa in the past 14 days. The move comes because of concerns about the new Ômicron variant.

The countries include South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi and Mozambique, Australian Health Minister Greg Hunt said at a press conference on Saturday (27).

Australian citizens who have been to these countries will be able to return to the country, but will have to be quarantined for 14 days.

“There are only 20 people quarantined in Howard Springs, Northern Territory, who arrived from South Africa last week,” Hunt said.

The minister stated that the country is prepared to strengthen the existing rules if the situation changes.

No cases of the Ômicron variant have yet been identified in Australia, and there are no direct flights to the country from the areas where the strain was found. But some travelers have flown from South Africa to quarantine-free areas in the past two weeks, and the Australian government is now tracking these people to conduct Covid tests.
