Australia beats Peru on penalties to qualify for the World Cup

After a 0-0 draw in normal time, Australia beat Peru 5-4 on penalties and secured this Monday (13) a spot in this year’s World Cup, which will be held in Qatar. The match between the two teams was valid for the intercontinental repechage for the World Cup. The game took place at the Ahmed bin Ali Stadium in Qatar.

Australia’s goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne, who entered late in extra time, saved the last penalty kicked by the Peruvians and secured his spot. The archer “danced” over the finish line before diving to stop Alex Valera’s charge and give it to Australia.

Redmayne came on with three minutes remaining for the penalty shootout and immediately became a hero with his tricks, trying to distract opposing batsmen.

It was enough for Luis Advicunla to hit the post, and then Valera to stop at the goalkeeper. Australia qualified for its fifth straight World Cup, sixth overall. They will play in Group D of the World Cup, alongside defending champions France, Denmark and Tunisia.

This Tuesday (14), the last place in the World Cup will be decided between Costa Rica and New Zealand, also in the intercontinental play-off, at the same Ahmed bin Ali stadium.

The World Cup will be played between November 21 and December 18.
