Australia: Education minister charged with harassment of former employee made available

Australian Education and Youth Minister Alan Taj has been released pending the outcome of an investigation into allegations of harassment by a former official, Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced today.

Former employee Rachel Miller today accused Taj of emotional and physical abuse during a relationship they had in 2017.

Miller, who revealed that they were in a relationship last year, told reporters that she had experienced an “emotionally and, in one case, physically abusive relationship” characterized by abuse of power. In one of their fights, she said, Taj kicked her.

In a statement, the minister denied the allegations “completely and categorically”.

Hours after Miller’s remarks, Prime Minister Scott Morrison told parliament that Taj had agreed to be made available as part of an “independent and fair inquiry”.

The case comes to light a few days after the release of the results of a formal inquiry into the “sex culture” of the Australian Parliament, according to which more than half of the members of Parliament had been the victim of moral or sexual harassment or sexual assault in duration of their work.

In 2019, a parliamentary aide accused an Australian minister of raping her in his office, sparking a wave of outrage across the country and protests. This case is now being considered by the judiciary.
