Australia: Heat wave peaks in Victoria – The mercury is expected to reach 45 degrees Celsius

A heatwave sweeping south-east Australia is peaking today, raising the bushfire alert level in the state of Victoria. Last week, a huge fire in the Grabians National Forest reduced farmhouses and hundreds of thousands of acres of farmland to ashes. The National Weather Service predicts the mercury could climb to 45C today in some parts of Victoria, Australia’s second most populous state. The temperature in Melbourne is forecast to reach 38°C. In the city of Mildura, in the state’s north-west, thermometers read 32.9C at 10.30am (local time) and the forecast called for a top temperature of 42C, exceeding the usual January for the region. Authorities in the state of Victoria are warning of “extreme” fire danger in some areas.
