Australia panics over Delta mutation: Large increase in cases

In a state of panic due to the Delta mutation is the Australia. The state of New South Wales announced on Thursday (8/7) the largest daily increase in local cases of coronavirus transmission this year, as officials try to eliminate a growing influx of the Delta strain in Sydney.

New South Wales, according to the Athens News Agency, reported 38 new cases of local contamination coronavirus, against 27 incidents recorded yesterday, Wednesday, as its capital, Sydney, prepares for a third week in lockdown.

«We do not want to extend the lockdown, we do not want to see Sydney or New South Wales enter and exit the lockdown “Until we have the vast majority of people vaccinated,” Gladys Bereziklian told reporters in Sydney.

She begs residents to limit visits to their families, as data show that the virus is transmitted during these meetings, while urging people with flu symptoms to undergo diagnostic tests with the participation of all members of their families because of Delta mutation showing high transmissibility.

Beretziklian has promised that the lockdown will be the last one needed for Sydney to overcome the pandemic, despite the fact that only about 10% of the country’s population has been fully vaccinated.

Of the current incidents, 26 were either isolated for the entire duration or part of the transmission period, while 11 cases spent time in the community while being infected. An incident is being investigated.

The total number of contamination cases is approaching 400 due to the largest outbreak in 2021 in the state, since the first incident was detected more than three weeks ago, in a limousine driver transporting airline crews traveling abroad.

A strict house arrest warrant has been issued in Sydney, Australia’s largest city, home to one-fifth of the country’s 25 million people, from June 26 for two weeks.

Alongside, Sydney residents’ travel has been restricted, as have meetings in public places.

Yesterday, Wednesday, the lockdown in Sydney was extended until July 16, after the failure of the restrictions to stop the spread of infections and the local officials to be annoyed by the detection of incidents related to illegal meetings, but also by the involvement of people who violated measures of social distancing.

Australia has weathered the pandemic spread relatively better than other developed countries, keeping COVID-19 numbers low, with fewer than 30,900 cases of infection and 910 deaths.

However, this success is undermined by the slow development of the program vaccinations.
