Australia: Scott Morrison calls elections May 21

The announcement of elections on May 21 was made by its prime minister AustraliaScott Morrison, who will fight to maintain his position, despite his difficult tenure with natural disasters, but also the coronavirus pandemic.

The approximately 17 million voters will be invited next month, as every three years, to nominate members of Parliament and half of the Senate. The leader of the ruling party will be named federal prime minister.

“These elections are about you, no one else”“Their country is at stake” is our country and its future, said the conservative prime minister, who according to opinion polls so far is heading for defeat from the center-left.

“I know the Australians have had a very difficult time. I also know that Australia will continue to face very difficult challenges in the years to come. “added during a press conference the leader of the National Liberal Party, which has been in power for ten years.

Mr Morrison, who is seeking to become the first prime minister to run for a second consecutive term after John Howard in 2004, is in opinion polls far behind Anthony Albanese’s Labor Party since June 2021.

Scott Morrison took office after the insurgency against Malcolm Turnbull’s predecessor. Nine months later, the conservative alliance he led remained in power with an election victory that disproved all predictions, as most polls predicted a Labor victory.

Although unemployment is at its lowest level in three decades and the economy is recovering, Scott Morrison is criticized for how it managed the giant fires and floods, as well as for the delays in vaccinating the population against coronavirus.
