The death toll from floods in northeastern Australia rose to seven today, with a strong storm hitting Brisbane and southeastern Queensland.
Queensland Local Government Prime Minister Anastasia Palace compared the storm to a cyclone and warned residents to avoid unnecessary travel as heavy rainfall is forecast until Monday. “If you do not have to be on the streets, please do not be on the streets,” Palace told a news conference.
Flood warnings have been issued for southeastern Queensland, and all beaches on the Gold Coast, a popular tourist destination, have been closed.
More than 1,400 homes in Brisbane are expected to be affected by the floods. Queensland emergency services said they had received countless calls for help in recent days.
About 700 people were forced to flee their homes in the town of Gibby, which has been hit by the worst floods since 1880.
Six people were killed in Queensland, including a 34-year-old man who tried to swim away from his car when it sank.
Another man was killed in New South Wales when his car was swept away by a torrent.
