Australia: Sydney loosens restrictions from tomorrow as vaccinations increase

Sydney, Australia’s largest city, will loosen its restrictions on social isolation tomorrow, Monday, a month after leaving the lockdown due to the coronavirus, which has lasted almost 100 days, as almost 90% of the population has already done so. the two doses of vaccines, officials said.

Although the relaxation of measures in the state of New South Wales, in which Sydney is located, is limited to people who are fully vaccinated, within its framework the limits for the guests in a house or for outdoor gatherings are lifted.

“We are leading the nation out of the pandemic,” said state Prime Minister Dominique Perotet, who called for a “final effort” to reach, and even surpass, the 95% vaccination milestone.

Hundreds of people protested against the vaccine in Sydney today, but the reaction to the vaccine is very limited in Australia, where polls show that opponents of the vaccine have single-digit percentages.

The southeastern state of Victoria has recorded most of Australia’s 1,417 new coronavirus cases, with public health figures showing another 10 deaths.

There are no new cases in the remote Northern Territory, where the lockdown was extended until tomorrow, Monday, at midnight to deal with a small outbreak in some areas.

Australia yesterday, Saturday, exceeded the limit of 80% of fully vaccinated.

“This fact gives us confidence to open up,” Federal Finance Minister Simon Birmingham said in an interview with Channel 9 today.

Australia on Monday eased restrictions on international borders, for the first time during the pandemic, but only for its citizens vaccinated by states with high vaccination rates.

However, inland travel is still hampered as most states keep internal borders closed. The state of Western Australia will reopen when the two-dose vaccination rate reaches 90%, its prime minister has announced.

Despite the variant Delta strain that brought the lockdowns for months to the two largest cities of Sydney and Melbourne, the Covid-19 case rate in Australia is much lower than that of many developed countries, as the country has recorded little more than 180,000 cases and 1,597 deaths.
