Australia: The number of people hospitalized due to Covid reached a record level

The number of Australians admitted to hospital with COVID-19 hit a record high of around 5,450 today, official figures showed, as the spread of highly infectious new sub-variants of Omicron put pressure on the national health system.

The number of people hospitalized is the highest since the coronavirus emerged, surpassing January’s high of 5,390 people during Omicron’s first wave of infections. The death toll in a 24-hour period has also risen, surpassing 100 on Saturday for the first time.

More than 1,000 nursing homes have seen outbreaks, the government said, as older people are generally more affected.

During a difficult time as the coronavirus and flu virus circulate, authorities have recommended the use of masks indoors as well as booster doses of vaccines, while urging businesses to allow remote working.

In Australia, one of the countries with the highest vaccination rate against COVID-19, about 95% of citizens aged 16 and over have received two doses of vaccines, although about 71% have received a booster dose. However, the so far tally of about 9.13 million infections and 11,181 deaths is lower than many developed economies.
