Australia’s government said the lighter impact of the Ômicron variant of the coronavirus means the country can move ahead with plans to reopen the economy, even as new infections reach a record 37,000 and the growth of the number of people hospitalized.
A record number of new daily cases were reported on Monday (3) in the states of Victoria, Queensland, South Australia and Tasmania, as well as in the Australian Capital Territory.
In the State of New South Wales, 20,794 cases were reported, higher than Sunday (2), but below the daily record of 22,577 set on Saturday, with test numbers lower during New Year’s weekend.
The national daily total broke a record of more than 37,150 cases, surpassing Saturday’s 35,327 cases, with neither Western Australia nor the Northern Territory reporting their marks.
“We need to stop thinking about caseloads and thinking about serious illnesses, live with the virus, manage our own health and ensure we are monitoring the symptoms so we can keep our economy open,” said Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison on Channel Seven.
Hospitalizations soared to 1,204 in New South Wales, a rise of more than 10% from Sunday and more than three times the level on Christmas Day.
