Australians live their own Hunger Games with the vaccination process

In the dystopian Hunger Games trilogy likened the vaccination process in Australia to a senior official, at a time when his country is facing a new rise in epidemics and a lack of vaccines.

Vaccine shortages have sparked a wave of panic among the population seeking vaccination as soon as possible, said Brad Hazard, Health Minister of densely populated New South Wales

“People are running after vaccines, that’s reminiscent of the Hunger Games world,” he said, describing Australians rushing to vaccination centers or desperate phone calls to get vaccination appointments.

In the world of Hunger Games, a group of young people enter the lottery every year to take part in a TV test where they have to kill each other.

Only 7% of the 25 million Australians have received two doses of the vaccine, the lowest rate among developed countries.

The Conservative Government of Australia has been betting heavily on the AstraZeneca vaccine and an Australian vaccine that has not passed the clinical trial phase.

Many Australians have avoided the AstraZeneca vaccine, which is now available for those over 60, seeking the Pfizer-BionTech vaccine at all costs.

However, supply is limited due to a shortage of global stock and late orders placed by the Australian authorities.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison is under intense pressure to speed up the vaccination campaign, as more than 300 cases have emerged in Sydney, which has returned to lockdown measures.

In total, Australia has recorded 30,000 cases since the beginning of the pandemic. Authorities are locally shutting down a number of major cities due to the outbreak of the epidemic.
