Australia’s most populous state confirms two cases of the Ômicron variant

Health officials in New South Wales, Australia’s most populous state, on Sunday confirmed two cases of the Ômicron variant.

Two people who arrived from South Africa over the weekend tested positive for the new variant of the coronavirus.

The New South Wales Department of Health said both passengers arrived in Sydney on Saturday night and had the result confirmed that same night.

Australia has banned foreign nationals who have traveled to nine African countries in the past 14 days because of concerns about the Ômicron variant. The strain was first reported to the World Health Organization (WHO) by South Africa on 24 November.

“This variant has a large number of mutations, some of which are worrying. Preliminary evidence suggests an increased risk of reinfection compared to other variants,” WHO said in a statement.
