Austria will take legal action against the European Union’s decision to classify gas and nuclear power as “green” and sustainable transition energy sources, the Austrian climate protection minister announced.
“Especially with the war going on in Ukraine, we cannot have a greenwashing program of investments in nuclear energy and fossil gas,” Minister Leonore Gevesler said in a statement. “Nuclear power and natural gas do not contribute to climate protection”.
Earlier today the European Parliament refused to block the European Commission from classifying investments in natural gas and nuclear power as environmentally friendly.
“As soon as this greenwashing program comes into force, Austria will submit its already prepared appeal against it to the European Court of Justice,” the minister said, adding that Austria would seek to include other member states as allies in its appeal.
