Austria: Catering, tourism, culture and sports open on 19 May

For May 19, a few days before Pentecost of Catholics (Monday, May 24), should be expected in Austria the first openings in catering, tourism, culture and sports, according to information leaked at noon today from consultations in Vienna today by the Austrian coalition government with experts, the governors of the nine L κραnder and the social partners, the APE reports.

In the decisions of the coalition government of the People’s Party of the chancellor Sebastian Kurtz and the Greens, to be announced in the afternoon, it is believed that the exposures will be predicted nationally, without it being clear whether individual L ,nder, due to a higher “seven-day impact” (new infections in the last seven days per 100,000 inhabitants) will be able to deviate from the plan.

In particular, Vienna – where the hard lockdown lasts until May 2 – has recently been unable to adopt the start of steps at various levels, while Tyrol could prove to be a particular problem, as a new variant has spread there, against which vaccinations are likely to have a limited effect.

It is considered quite certain that from Wednesday, May 19, the operation of the catering companies will start again, where the obligation of mask and registration of data will apply, while it is said that the test will be mandatory and only four people per table (plus children) will be allowed and longer distances between the tables, while closure is planned at 22.00.

Similar rules apply to tourism, while at events, especially in the cultural and sports sectors, indoor spaces will probably only be used at half capacity, while food and drink will not be allowed at events.

The so-called “green passport” can be used as a certificate of entry from the end of May, while the first steps of opening in the various sectors will have to be monitored for a few weeks and, if progress is favorable, there could be further relaxation in June. so it will be possible to open the gyms while, according to information, the restaurant after 22:00 will probably have to wait for its opening.

The complexity researcher Peter Klimek appeared skeptical about the “forecasts” in today’s interview on Austrian Public Radio, warning that “it is not clear what the situation will be in mid-May and therefore one can not really know how big the opening steps will be. ».

“Even if there is more room for openings due to vaccination and warmer weather, there should be no ‘early opening,'” he warned, noting that last spring each opening step was evaluated every two weeks.

Virologist Andreas Bergtaler from the Molecular Medicine Research Center of the Austrian Academy of Sciences also called, in an interview with Austrian Radio, for the necessary foresight in actions as, as he noted, plays with this success “.

The prospect of simultaneous opening in mid-May in various sectors in the country, but which will be associated with “very strict conditions”, such as, for example, the mandatory entrance test in the field of catering and tourism – but not in retail – had presented last Tuesday the federal Chancellor of Austria Sebastian Kurtz.

He was pleased that the level of infection is relatively stable, that all the opening steps will be done carefully and that masks, tests and also the green passport will play a big role.

He also highlighted the positive effects of the additional approximately one million doses of Biontech-Pfizer vaccine expected to arrive in Austria earlier in April, May and June, citing a “turbo vaccination” to be achieved with the first deliveries of the vaccine, of which about 100,000 more are expected in April, 300,000 in May and 600,000 in June.
