Austria-Coronavirus: Exceeded 2 million cases on the day vaccination became mandatory

About two years after the outbreak of the new coronavirus pandemic in Austria, the number of infections exceeded the 2 million mark yesterday, according to the data of the Ministry of Interior.

The Alpine country with a population of about 9 million has recorded 32,258 cases in the past 24 hours, according to authorities. The number of SARS-CoV-2 infections has been around 30,000 in the last two weeks, in part due to the spread of the more contagious Omicron variant.

Austria has recorded around 14,200 deaths due to COVID-19.

The development was recorded on the day that vaccination against COVID-19 became mandatory for all residents over the age of 18, with a penalty of a large fine in case of non-compliance, a measure unprecedented in the European Union.

According to official figures, as of Friday, 75.7% of the population had received the first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, much lower than in other EU countries, such as France or Spain.
