Austria deports four Russian diplomats

Austria is deporting four Russian diplomats for conduct that is not in line with their diplomatic status, a spokeswoman for the Austrian Foreign Ministry said today. With this decision, the country is working with other EU countries that have taken similar action this week.

Unlike other EU countries, including France, Italy and Germany, Minister Alexander Salenberg’s spokeswoman did not say that the decision was taken because of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The three diplomats working at the Russian embassy and the fourth, based in Salzburg, will have to leave Austria by Tuesday, she said.

“These (four) people acted in a way that was not consistent with their diplomatic capacity,” the spokeswoman said in a brief statement, without elaborating. This phrase is commonly used in cases involving espionage, as reported by Reuters and the Athens News Agency.

Sweden, Denmark and Romania are among those EU countries that announced this week that they were deporting Russian diplomats for the war in Ukraine.

The coordinated movements took place shortly after the images came to light and reportedly showed the corpses of civilians in the streets of the Ukrainian city of Butsa, which caused an international outcry.

Although some EU countries have deported dozens Russians diplomats austria characterizes personae non gratae (undesirable persons) only a small number of russian diplomats residing in its territory.

THE Austria hosts an unusually large number of Russian diplomats because Vienna is the seat of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe and a United Nations center, which includes services such as the International Atomic Energy Agency and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. Crime.

Russia has 290 accredited officials for its diplomatic mission in Austria, including 162 diplomats in charge of bilateral relations, who nevertheless represent Moscow in both the UN and the OSCE.

The Austrian Foreign Ministry lists 65 diplomats working at the Russian embassy. These do not include dozens of others working in the United Nations missions in Vienna and the OSCE.
