For the second time in a row since the beginning of this year, a new “Sunday record” in the number of new infections within 24 hours is recorded in Austria, with the Ministries of Health and Interior reporting today 2,199 new cases, while a first “record” was set last Sunday, February 28, with 2,123 new infections within twenty-four hours.
Since the beginning of 2021, until a week ago, there were no more than 2,000 new cases within 24 hours on Sundays in Austria, with the most recent high number, namely 2,641, being recorded on Sunday 13 December 2020.
Now, the average daily increase in the number of new infections – based on the last seven days – is over 2,000 new cases a day, and the seven-day incidence, ie new infections in the last seven days per 100,000 inhabitants, has increased, according to the Organization for Health and Food Safety, at 178.6 on Sunday, while yesterday, Saturday, it was 177.6.
This number is highest in the state of Salzburg (240), Vienna (210.1) and Lower Austria (209.6), while the lowest seven-day incidence is in the state of Vorarlberg (75.5), followed by Tyrol (124.6).
In Austria, 1,447 patients with Covid-19 are currently hospitalized (four fewer than yesterday, Saturday), and 314 of them are in Intensive Care Units, eight less than on Saturday.
The number of active cases in Austria today stands at 22,868 and this number is the highest ever recorded since the beginning of 2021.
The death toll has risen by 19 over the past 24 hours to a total of 8,713, with an average of 25 deaths being added daily to the country, and more than 90 people per 100,000 inhabitants dying from Covid-19.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, 472,871 people have been infected with SARS-CoV 2 in Austria and 443,152 have recovered, while as of Saturday, a total of 802,973 had been vaccinated against the new coronavirus.
