Austria plans to end lockdown, but only for vaccinated

Unvaccinated individuals will remain in lockdown even after Austria suspends its broader measure against the coronavirus for the general public on Sunday, confirmed Chancellor Karl Nehammer on Tuesday (7), a day after taking office.

Austria’s two-week lockdown was aimed at curbing an increase in the daily number of record Covid-19 infections, with restaurants, bars, theatres, museums and non-essential shops closed to all but drive-thru and take-away businesses . Hotels are closed to tourists.

A week before the lockdown, the blockade had been imposed on people not fully vaccinated against the coronavirus. They were barred from going to the now closed places and were allowed out of the house only for the same reasons as the public today, like going to work.

“The lockdown for the unvaccinated continues,” Nehammer said at a news conference, as he confirmed that the harsher measures would be lifted on Sunday as planned.

However, details have yet to be worked out at a meeting on Wednesday between the government and influential governors of Austria’s nine provinces.

“For all the unvaccinated who are suffering from being incarcerated, there is a clear offer: you can get out of this if you take the chance to get vaccinated,” said Nehammer, adding that his aim was to encourage as many as possible to receive their first dose of the vaccine.

Asked whether restaurants and hotels would reopen over the weekend, Nehammer said he had already agreed with provincial governors and that the aim was to reopen business as widely as possible.

The question that remained was what security measures needed to be taken, he added.
