Russian President Vladimir Putin told Austrian Chancellor Carl Nehamer that his country could continue to pay for Russian gas supplies in euros during a meeting this week, Nehamer said, according to Reuters.
It is recalled that Moscow has warned Europe by restricting gas flows, demanding that supplies be paid in rubles in response to Western sanctions imposed on Moscow after its invasion of Ukraine.
Mr Nehamer had said he had “extremely direct, open and tough” talks with Mr Putin was close to Moscow on Monday over the invasion of Ukraine, but did not mention talks to secure his country’s gas supply.
According to Reuters, Austria, which supplies 80% of its gas from Russia, opposes the EU imposing a direct gas embargo on Moscow, arguing that it is not possible to suddenly turn to other suppliers.
According to Nehammer today, Putin said “gas supplies are secured, Russia will deliver the agreed quantities and that payments can continue to be made in euros.”
At the same time, the Austrian Chancellor reiterated his opposition to imposing an embargo, saying that this “would mean that both (Austrian) industry and households would be seriously harmed”.
