There officially a law onvaccination obligation in Austria. The government, led by the new chancellor Karl Nehammer, explained the rules that will be in force from February 1st were announced a few months ago by the then chancellor Alexander Schallenberg, the first case of compulsory vaccination against Covid in a European country. Approval in Parliament is expected on Thursday.
The obligation applies from the beginning of the month February for all residents of Austria over 18 years of age. To give everyone the opportunity to get vaccinated, checks and fines will start only from mid-March. For the chancellery it is not a war between vaccinated and unvaccinated: “This law only serves to reaffirm that vaccines are the best guarantee we have to be able to live in freedom”.
Those who do not get vaccinated will be contacted for control and can be fined up to 4 times in a year. The fine ranges from € 600 to € 3600 and is canceled in the two weeks following the check if you decide to get vaccinated.
The checks will be random. Only if these are not sufficient to advance the vaccination campaign, after hearing a committee of experts, warnings will be sent to those who have not yet been vaccinated. The next step will be to send vaccination appointments and anyone who does not show up will be fined. In Austria, 71.6% of the population is vaccinated with two doses. There are two exceptions: pregnant women and those with medical reasons that make them exempt from vaccination. The exemption period for those who are from Covid-19 is 180 days.
For the Chancellor, the project, albeit delicate, is “compliant with the ConstitutionAnd the law can be suspended by the Ministry of Health. Last Saturday over 25,000 people demonstrated in Vienna against the obligation.
I am Italy and Greece the other European countries to have introduced vaccination obligations by age: those over 60 in Greece and those over 50 in Italy. With us there are also obligations for school and university staff, health workers, representatives of the police and external workers of the RSA.
