Austria: Violence against women in the red – The country has one of the highest rates in the EU

Shock is caused by the particularly high percentage of women who have suffered physical violence in Austria.

It is one of the highest in the European Union, according to the latest report by the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA), on the occasion of today’s International Women’s Day.

The data, as broadcast by the Athenian News Agency, report that 6% of women in Austria have experienced physical violence and that this figure is 20% between the ages of 16 and 29.

This fact places her Austria, together with Finland, in the first place for violence against women up to 29 years old, who in the relevant survey of the Organization stated that they had suffered physical violence in the last 24 months, while in terms of violence against women in general Austria is in the first third of the list.

The report “Crime, Security and Victims’ Rights” is based on a Fundamental Rights Agency survey of criminal experiences and contains data from nearly 35,000 people from 27 EU countries, Britain and Northern Macedonia.

According to the report, most transactions violence against women in Austria they take place in their homes (53%), with many of the women having psychological consequences after the attack, 30% experiencing anxiety and 24% experiencing depression.

The report notes that only 17% of women in Austria reported incidents of violence to the police. 41% of women in the country have experienced harassment and in the case of young women aged 16 to 29, this figure is 64%, while the vast majority, 92%, say they did not report the harassment they received.

Across Europe, more than one in four women (28%) said they had been harassed in the year before the survey, 35% had experienced domestic violence, mostly by family members or relatives (30%), and more than two in three women (68%) say they did not report the incident to the police.

This confirms that the scale of violence against women is clearly underestimated, says the Organization for Fundamental Rights, which on the occasion of Women’s Day calls for more support for women to ensure access to their rights.
