Austria’s focus hit hard: Lost 9 billion euros due to coronavirus

His pandemic cost him dearly coronavirus in the focus of Austria which lost about 9 billion euros, according to financial consulting firm Regioplan, just weeks after the first openings.

While turnover in Austrian restaurants and bars in 2019 was around € 12 billion, the year of crisis, 2020, decreased by 4.4 billion to 7.6 billion euros, which corresponds to a decrease of about 37%, with the outlook for 2021 being equally ominous, as in the first half of this year the turnover 4.6 billion euros.

However, the decline in sales did not affect all sectors of the catering industry equally, as while overnight catering and mountaineering often had full losses, catering companies, for example in health facilities, did not record any turnover losses.

Bankruptcy in the catering sector, as reported by the Athens News Agency, may have been halved to 360 in 2020, but there is a delay due to state subsidies and temporary changes in the bankruptcy law, which will continue to apply in 2021. , so that up to 1,400 bankruptcies in catering and accommodation are expected in 2022.

Last year, delivery services benefited greatly, with their importance to continue to grow in the coming months, including through the expansion of so-called “ghost kitchens”, where they are iconic restaurant brands developed by delivery services and provided in stores.

A pizzeria can, for example, in addition to its own dishes – offer burgers or burritos with a different name. As a result, delivery services no longer just take over the supply chain for catering businesses, as they used to, but become real competitors in the industry, according to financial consulting firm Regioplan.

As an example, it is mentioned that the delivery service “Mjam” announced in February that it will create several hundred such “ghost kitchens” throughout Austria in 2021.
