Author of “Renascer” changes intersex character to trans woman; understand

O remake of the soap opera “Renascer” presents differences in the plot in relation to the original version, from 1993. Among them is the story of the character Buba, who, in the first version, was an intersex person (at the time called “hermaphrodite”) and, now, will be a trans woman.

The decision to change was made by the author of the new version of the serial, Bruno Luperi, who believes that the issue of transsexuality has more visibility today, being better understood by the population.

Grandson of the author of the first version (Benedito Ruy Barbosa), Luperi believes that the greater visibility of the trans issue can provide stronger debates in the new version of the soap opera.

In the old version, actress Maria Luisa Mendonça, who is a woman, played Buba as intersex, which is a person born with physical or genetic characteristics of both sexes.

The change alters a good part of the plot since, in the original version, Buba's physical issue generated contradictions and psychological questions in her and in the characters that worked around her plot.

In the original version, despite the character identifying and being recognized as a female person, Buba had issues with her own body, with her sexual organs, which had male characteristics.

The plot of an intersex person made the character, in 1993, gain prominence in the soap opera, generating some commotion and debates among the public, despite Buba being in the secondary cast.

Now it will be the turn of Gabriela Medeiros, who is a transgender woman, to give life to the transsexual version of Buba.

In other words, unlike the original version, Buba will not experience issues linked to his sex, but to his gender identity.

The report from CNN contacted TV Globo to speak to Luperi about the change in the character's storyline, but was informed that he does not currently have a date available for interviews.
