A new 2 pound coin (about R$7.45) in honor of literary author George Orwell was launched by the Royal Mint of Great Britain this Monday (13). Marking the 75th anniversary of the author’s death, the reverse design (tails) pays homage to one of his most famous novels, “1984”.
The coin, designed by Henry Gray, depicts what appears to be an eye on one side, but is actually a camera lens in the center.
Orwell’s 1949 book presents a “Big Brother” government that spies on its citizens and forces them to “doublethink,” or simultaneously accept contradictory versions of the truth.
The quote “Big Brother is watching you” surrounds the camera lens, while the inscription on the edge of the coin reads ‘THERE WAS TRUTH AND THERE WAS FALSENESS’, another quote from the novel.
According to the Royal Mint, the two pound coin is one of the denominations most appreciated by collectors.
Since its introduction into the UK’s definitive coinage in 1998, the £2 coin has received more than 50 designs on the reverse, including coins honoring other literary figures such as William Shakespeare, Jane Austen and JRR Tolkien.
