At least six people have been killed by wildfires in Hawaii, according to Maui County Mayor Richard Bissen Jr.
Search and rescue efforts are still ongoing, he said, warning that the number of people killed could rise as more information becomes available.
Many structures were destroyed, several of them burned “to the ground”, Bissen said.
More than 2,000 people are now in shelters on Maui, the mayor said.
Bissen noted that many “homes, businesses, structures were burned – many of them completely destroyed” and people went to shelters, including many schools that closed to accommodate the influx.
“We have more than 2,100 people in shelters. Within these shelters, I mentioned to you – and several who are missing in the sense that they are in their cars and have not entered the actual shelter,” he said.
