The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) announced today that it has arrested a student who was providing Russian forces with information about the storage site of toxic products, with the aim of causing “environmental disaster” in southern Ukraine.
Moscow and Kiev regularly report that they have arrested foreigners or their citizens who are preparing attacks on behalf of the opposing side.
The SBU said it had detained an “agent” of Russia's security service (FSB) in the Odesa region.
“The main mission of this man was to locate and inform about the coordinates of places where toxic substances are stored, mainly warehouses or storage areas of herbicides,” he explained.
The Ukrainian agency accused the Russian forces of wanting to launch “air strikes” against these sites with the help of information provided by the student, in order to cause “environmental destruction” in the area.
The suspect, who faces a life sentence, is a student at the University of Odessa, according to authorities.
THE southern Ukraine is often the target of Russian drone and missile attacks.
Kiev accuses Moscow of causing massive environmental damage after its invasion in February 2022. Among other things, it accuses Russian forces of causing an explosion at the Kakhovka hydroelectric dam on the Dnieper River in June 2023. Russia, for its part, blames the disaster on Kiev, although the area where the dam is located is controlled by Russian forces.
