The Mexican Health Secretariat issued, on Tuesday (5), an epidemiological alert in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico, due to an outbreak caused by the bacteria Klebsiella oxytoca which, according to the released statement, “can cause infections in people with weakened immune systems”.
Mexican authorities confirmed 15 cases and another four probable cases. “The age range (of patients) varies from 0 to 14 years, although the largest proportion of cases are newborns with intravenous, intramuscular and subcutaneous fluid administration, with clinical and laboratory data compatible with bloodstream infection” , highlights the statement.
Among the patients most vulnerable to this bacteria are those who use devices such as respirators, intravenous catheters or those who undergo prolonged treatments with certain antibiotics, according to information from the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Transmission commonly occurs through personal contact, but can also happen when there is exposure to contaminated water, land or equipment. In medical care settings, Klebsiella infections frequently occur among sick patients receiving treatment for other conditions.
