Rosstandart has made a change in GOST on the design of technical documentation, according to which government agencies and corporations are prohibited from using popular American fonts in government agencies. The “sanctions” included the well-known Times New Roman, Arial, Courier New and others.
A member of the technical committee, Alexander Kharkov, explained that the current version of GOST requires the use of American fonts, which are currently available only for the Windows operating system. Domestic operating systems used by government agencies do not support this type of fonts.
To solve this problem with minimal cost and inconvenience, it was decided to switch to using domestic fonts. Changes in GOST will help maintain the correctness of document flow in government agencies and move closer to technological independence in the IT sector.
Rosstandart recommends that officials switch to domestic software, change the OS and the entire suite of office programs. At the same time, it is important to note that government agencies need to use fonts that will be as similar as possible to “prohibited”. Otherwise, the structure of documents may be distorted and lose the desired shape. At the moment, Rosstandart advises using the PT Astra and Liberation fonts.
It is worth noting that American fonts are not completely “banished” from government agencies. They can still be used on a personal computer or to print files. However, it is prohibited to transfer documents that use foreign fonts to other government organizations or transfer them between computers. In addition, they cannot be used to create PDF files.
For reference, the authorities of the Ulyanovsk region in June 2019 were the first to use the domestic font PT Astra Serif in document circulation. Rosstandart considers this experiment to be successful, and therefore the change in GOST will allow to fully harmonize the import substitution program with the requirements for technical documentation.
