Authorities try to stabilize missile-hit residential building in Kiev

A tall residential building in Kiev was hit by a missile or rocket on Saturday morning. Images of the scene showed a major impact on the height of about 10 stories.

The Chief International Correspondent of the CNN, Clarissa Ward, visited the site, which is very close to one of the capital’s airports. Smoke could still be seen coming out of the building with the streets and air below filled with debris.

“There are ambulances on site. And what they’re doing now is trying to get some scaffolding up there to try to prevent the two-story collapse,” Ward reports, adding that miraculously no one was actually killed in the incident.

“We are hearing from the Ukrainian authorities that six people were injured,” she adds. “They are being treated in several hospitals.”

It was unclear who is responsible for the damage at this point, Ward said.

“Ukrainian officials saying this was the work of a Russian missile. And the Russians are saying that they believe this was really a Ukrainian missile defense system that somehow went wrong and ended up hitting this apartment building.”

She continued: “Now whoever is responsible, and however it happened, the reality is that this is the kind of thing that happens when you have a war going on in a big metropolis like Kiev.”

“This is a city of almost 2.9 million people and we are in a very central area here. This is not on the outskirts of town. You can imagine how terrifying it was for people who were sleeping, or just waking up, having breakfast with their families on a Saturday morning, already terrified of the situation, only to find their building hit in this attack.”

After months of military escalation and intemperance on the Ukrainian border, Russia attacked the Eastern European country. At dawn this Thursday (24), Russian forces began to bomb several regions of the country – follow the repercussion live on CNN.

What was seen in the following hours, however, was an attack on almost the entire Ukrainian territory, with explosions in several cities, including the capital Kiev.

According to Ukrainian officials, dozens of deaths have been confirmed in the armies of both countries.

Russia has been tightening its military grip around Ukraine for the past year, amassing tens of thousands of troops, equipment and artillery at the country’s gates.

In recent weeks, diplomatic efforts to defuse tensions have been unsuccessful.

The escalation in the years-long conflict between Russia and Ukraine has set off the continent’s biggest security crisis since the Cold War, raising the specter of a dangerous confrontation between Western powers and Moscow.
