Chinese automaker Geely Holding is launching smartphones, for which the Geely founder has set up a new company. Hubei Xingji Shidai Technology Co. Ltd, founded by Eric Li, has signed a strategic cooperation agreement with the Wuhan Economic and Technological Development Zone for the production of mobile phones, Geely reported.
The company will be headquartered in Wuhan and will focus on “integrating global technologies and resources to develop premium smart devices, including smartphones, for global consumers.” Geely’s entry into the smartphone market underscores the automaker’s drive to expand into new areas.
According to research firm Canalys, smartphone shipments to China in the second quarter of this year were down 17% from the same period last year. According to IDC, worldwide shipments have grown by more than 13%. As Huawei’s market share has declined due to US sanctions, Chinese competitors such as Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo are looking to take over a larger share of the market. Geely enters an aggressive market and is set to face the likes of Apple, Samsung and Xiaomi in the premium smartphone category.
The company did not provide details on the smartphones or when they might be released, but said smartphones will complement its automotive business. Li said mobile phones and devices could be “the gateway to great automotive applications.”
There is a close relationship between technology in smart cockpits in cars and software for smartphones. The main trend in the near future is to create custom ecosystems that cross borders and provide users with more user-friendly, intelligent and easily connected multi-screen interfaces.

We will remind, earlier one of the leaders of the smartphone market Xiaomi announced its entry into the market of electric vehicles.
