Auto sales in Russia in April increased by 290%: which brands are the most popular

The Russian car market is recovering after the crisis spring of 2020. The Automobile Manufacturers Committee of the Association of European Businesses (AEB) reports record growth in new car sales in Russia.

The new AEB report says that April 2021 saw a 290.4% increase in new car sales compared to April 2020, which is referred to as “black”. New car sales increased by 113,042 units, reaching 151,964 units. In total, according to the results of the first four months of this year, automakers sold 515,934 new cars in Russia, which is 24.3% more compared to the same period last year, but at the same time, 4.5% less when compared to 2019 year.

The AEB Automobile Manufacturers Committee expects that this year the domestic car market will get back on track and, according to preliminary forecasts, by the end of 12 months, sales will grow by about 2.1%. However, government support is still required to stabilize the situation.

Lada remains the most popular car brand on the Russian market. AvtoVAZ cars sold 37,931 units last month, which is 304% more than in April last year. In total, from January to April, 121,839 new cars with the Lada nameplate were sold in Russia. As of April, the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance, which also includes AvtoVAZ with the brands Lada and Niva, Infiniti (the premium brand of Nissan) and Datsun, controls 37.1% of the Russian car market. The second most popular brand in the country remains the Korean KIA, which sold 19,101 new cars last month. It is followed by parent company Hyundai with April sales of 15,483 units. Renault cars were sold in the country last month 13 957 units, and in the first four months – 44 321 units. The VW Group, which includes brands such as Volkswagen, Audi and Skoda, held 14.6% of the market in April with cumulative sales of 22,133 units.

If we talk about the best-selling models in the Russian market, then the Lada Granta sedan holds the palm for a month in a row. In the first four months of this year, its sales amounted to 44,246 units, of which 14,050 were in April alone. The second place is occupied by another car of the domestic brand. This is Lada Vesta with sales of 35,049 units from January to April and 11,178 units in April. KIA Rio closes the top three, sales of which increased from 1,737 units in April 2020 to 6,996 units in April 2021. Also, the 25 best-selling cars in Russia in April included two cars of the Japanese Toyota brand – the Camry sedan and the RAV-4 crossover, five Renault models – from Logan and Sandero to Duster, Kaptur and Arkana, two VW models – Polo and Tiguan and three Skoda – Rapid PA II, Kodiaq and Karoq. Crossovers like the Hyundai Santa Fe, Mitsubishi Outlander and Mazda CX-5 were also found on the list of best-selling cars.
