Autonomous killer drones are no longer fantasy. UN experts suggest the first autonomous drone attack on humans took place last year

Drones have already significantly changed certain market segments, and with the deployment of mass delivery systems for goods by drones, their impact on life will become even more noticeable. As it turned out, even last year there was an incident that previously could only be found in science fiction films or books.

Autonomous killer drones are no longer fantasy. UN experts suggest the first autonomous drone attack on humans took place last year

According to a report by a group of experts from the UN Security Council, in March 2020, drones attacked people in Libya. And they did it of their own free will. In this case, we are talking about the Kargu-2 combat unmanned aerial vehicles of the Turkish company STM, which at that time worked in a highly efficient autonomous mode. Thanks to this, they could make decisions about combat targets on their own. The drones were programmed to attack targets without the need for operator confirmation.

As a result, the devices, experts believe, independently tracked down human targets and attacked them without asking for confirmation. It is about detonating the charges carried by the drones upon reaching the target.

All this happened during the conflict between the government forces of Libya and the military group led by the commander of the Libyan National Army, Khalifa Haftar.

It is worth noting that the report does not contain data on the number of victims and whether there were any at all. But at the same time, experts suggest that this was probably the first time in history when drones attacked people in autonomous mode.
