Autumn has a climate conducive to aggravating allergies; know how to prevent

The change in temperature that comes with autumn, with dry air, a decrease in relative humidity, and environmental issues such as dust and dust mites, aggravates respiratory allergies.

That’s what allergist and immunologist Ana Karolina Marinho explains, CNN Radio in the Medical Correspondent.

Among the most common allergies are “rhinitis, asthma and allergic conjunctivitis” and those who already have these conditions “will suffer a little more” in the autumn.

The frequent symptoms are “runny nose, sneezing, stuffy nose and itchy nose and eye, in addition to allergic conjunctivitis”, in the case of rhinitis.

Asthmatics may have worsened shortness of breath, wheezing and coughing.

In addition to respiratory ones, skin allergies also deserve attention this time of year.

According to Ana Karolina, “when the temperature drops, the tendency is for the skin to become drier, especially those who already have dermatitis, hot baths are also harmful.”

Prevention, according to the allergist, includes antiallergic drugs, nasal hygiene, hydration and control at home.

“Environmental control is important, like taking off the coat stored in the closet and washing it first, the same with blankets.”

It is also essential “not to forget vaccines, as respiratory viruses trigger allergies at this time.”

Treatment still has topical medications, which may be indicated by health professionals.
