Autumn starts with stability in hydroelectric reservoirs

Even with the beginning of autumn, the season with less rainfall, the hydroelectric reservoirs should remain at stable levels next April, after the drought faced in 2021.

According to the latest bulletin from the National Electric System Operator, the reservoirs in the North and Northeast regions should reach more than 90% of storage by the end of March, while the Southeast/Midwest subsystem registers volumes above 60%.

The southern region, which has suffered from a lack of rain since the end of last year, should face levels below 40%.

The meteorologist of the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) Francisco de Assis spoke to CNN and explained that the forecast for the first month of the season is for rains within normal levels between the Center-North and Southeast-Northeast regions of the country. For the South region, the expectation is for below-average rainfall.

“The rest of March promises good rains for the south of Brazil up to the region of São Paulo. But the dry season is already starting in May and, in June, it rains even less than in May. The southern region will still suffer from the effects of La Niña, especially until mid-autumn, and this may affect mainly the beginning of the planting of crops”, explains the specialist.

Is Brazil recovering from the biggest water crisis of the last 90 years?

Information from the National Electric System Operator shows that the reservoirs of three of the four subsystems will end the month of March with storage above the level expected for the end of the same month in 2021.

According to ONS data compiled by CNN, the Southeast/Midwest subsystem, responsible for about 70% of the country’s energy generation capacity by water source, was the one that showed the greatest advance, with a forecast of 75% higher occupancy. than in the same period last year.

The subsystem should reach the end of March with 63.9% of stored energy. In the same period of 2021, the expectation was 36.5%.

The Northeast subsystem presented the second highest variation, with an increase of 35.6% in the forecast for the end of this month. The subsystem in the North region, on the other hand, should increase the level of reservoirs by 18.6% in relation to the same period last year.

The reservoirs in the South region were the only ones that showed a decline in storage, with a drop of 38.9% compared to last year. The area is experiencing the worst drought in 70 years.
