Three climbers are missing after they were swept away by an avalanche on Friday while climbing the Cayambe volcano in northern Ecuador. The head of the fire service in the area clarified in a press conference that it is an Ecuadorian national and two Germans. Rescuers are making “every possible effort” to locate the missing, but “the conditions on the mountain are not the best”, he added. The national association of mountain guides (Asociación Ecuatoriana de GuÃas de Montaña / ASEGUIM) informed via a post on social media that two of its members realized that some people had “fallen into a ravine”. They tried to contact them, “without getting a response,” according to the same source. The avalanche occurred around 06:15 (local time), Friday morning. The Cayambe volcano is located 60 kilometers northeast of the capital Quito and reaches a height of 5,790 meters. Ecuador's Environment Ministry announced that due to the avalanche, tourist access to the Cayambe-Coca National Park was temporarily prohibited.
